Fundraising evening held for Stephen O’Connor in Sydney

Last Christmas Stephen O’Connor travelled home to Ireland with his girlfriend Michelle to enjoy the Christmas period. Tragically, Stephen collapsed in a shopping centre while at home and died suddenly. There was no known cause for Stephen’s death so it was adjudged to be due to Adult Sudden Death Syndrome. If a defibrillator had been on hand at the shopping centre that day, Stephen’s death may have been prevented. Both Stephen and Michelle were active members of the GAA scene in Sydney. In honour of Stephen, his girlfriend Michelle set up the Stephen O’Connor Fundraiser which hoped to raise enough funds through an auction and raffle to provide defibrillators and training to each of the 9 GAA clubs in Sydney to try alleviating the risk of such a tragedy happening again. The night was held at the Tea Gardens Hotel in Bondi Junction on June 21st. A big crowd attended with members of all the clubs present along with many Irish businesses including Taxback.com. The night was a great success and a credit to Michelle and her co-organisers for the night. We were happy to contribute raffle prizes to such a worthy cause plus make a donation of $500 directly into the fund. In association with this, Taxback.com is the primary sponsor of the Bondi Gaels GAA team in  Michelle (centre) pictured at the fundraising event

Sydney who also made a cash donation directly into the fund. Well done to Michelle and the event organisers who put such great effort into this great cause in honour of Stephen. These defibrillators will safeguard thousands of GAA players & members that pass through the clubs in Sydney over the next few years. We are a proud sponsor and supporter of Irish sporting teams in Australia and wish them all the best.
