#TaxTipsIreland

Did you know that you can claim tax relief on the fees you pay for foreign languages and IT courses?

Claiming tax relief on the fees for foreign language and IT courses is a valuable opportunity that many individuals might not be aware of.

It’s true! Whether you are a student or you pay the fees on behalf of another individual, you can qualify for tax relief on the course.

This includes parents paying for their children's courses or employers covering the costs for their employees' professional development.

To take advantage of this tax relief, individuals need to follow specific procedures outlined by the tax authorities.

So, without further ado, we’ll outline just how you can do it!

But I don't want to do my own taxes...

Ok then, click here instead!

How do I know if I can qualify for this relief?

Firstly, you should know that Irish and English language courses do not qualify, even if you believe English is a foreign language!

Essentially, to qualify for this relief, your course must be:

  • an IT or foreign language course
  • part of a list of approved courses
  • must run for two years or less
  • and you must have completed it with an award of a certificate of competence, not a certificate of attendance.

If you fall under any of these categories, you could be entitled to claim relief at the standard rate of tax (20%) where the fees range between €315 and €1,270.

You will not be able to claim relief on the course if it was funded by a grant, scholarship, or your employer, and if you receive partial funding, you can only declare relief on the portion of fees that you pay.
