UK Pay Time!

US Income tax filing and payment day should be moved from April 15th to November 1st so it can be close to US election day. People ought to have their tax bills fresh in mind as they go to vote. - Steven Calabresi

We've been very slack of late in putting content up here so apologies all. There is actually so much going on in the world of UK tax that we couldn't possibly put up details of it all. What we did want to remind you of is the 31st July deadline. If you're self assessed your 2nd payment on account is due in a week. If you're not sure if you need to pay you should consult your Tax Return for 2009/10 as it is upon the 2009/10 liability that your payment on account is calculated (very roughly: your 2nd payment on account will be half of your 2009/10 liability. Further details can be found here under the title "payments on account": https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/understand-statement.htm)

One final thing: if you haven't received a notice from HMRC reminding you of the payment, that doesn't mean that one isn't due. HMRC have informed the ICAEW that there has been a delay in sending out some of the reminders!!! Of course there has - they've been sending these reminders for years and they are sent at the same time every year; they were sent last year and they will be sent again next year, so why would you expect them to go on time.

Better be safe than sorry so my advice is to check whether a payment is due. Failure to pay on time will mean daily interest charges.
