New sensory garden for Kilkenny

20 July 2012

Opening children's garden

Once The Taxback Group directors pledged the donation, no time was wasted in getting started. It was an ambitious project and one which demanded help from all sides. The Enable Ireland-run facility called on workers, friends, parents and volunteers to help with transforming of the space.

Taxback.com staff members were also keen to roll up their sleeves and get involved and so a Saturday in May was set aside for tasks such as painting, planting and woodwork.

As the name suggests, the sensory garden has been designed to stimulate all five senses and promote both emotional and physical wellbeing. It contains several wheelchair-accessible features including flowerbeds for planting and a sand box. The range of different scented and textured plants and herbs, as well as the brightly coloured mural, are particularly suitable for children with sensory difficulties.

At the opening ceremony, Paula Rudkins, Director of the centre, thanked everyone involved with the project. It is hoped that the sensory garden is replicated in many other centres across Ireland.

Enable Ireland provides free services to children and adults with disabilities and their families from 40 locations in 14 counties.
